MANILA, Philippines — US President Donald Trump declared that the United States had achieved a “total and complete victory” after securing a two-week ceasefire deal with Iran, a truce that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing concerns over Tehran’s uranium enrichment.

Speaking to Agence France-Presse on Tuesday, Trump hailed the agreement as a decisive win for Washington. “The United States had won a total and complete victory,” he said, adding that Iran’s enriched uranium would be “perfectly taken care of.”

The deal was reached barely an hour before Trump’s announcement, following weeks of escalating tensions in the Middle East. The ceasefire is set to last two weeks and includes commitments from Iran-linked militias to halt fighting. Israel has backed the truce but clarified that it does not extend to Lebanon.

Trump credited China with persuading Iran to come to the negotiating table, suggesting Beijing played a crucial role in brokering the agreement. “China got Tehran to negotiate,” Trump said, emphasizing that this diplomatic intervention was key to securing the ceasefire.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil passageway, is expected to ease fears of prolonged energy disruptions. The strait had been closed amid hostilities, raising concerns about global oil supply and economic fallout.

Despite Trump’s optimism, Tehran has also portrayed the deal as a victory for its side, and analysts caution that the agreement’s details remain unclear. Questions linger over the scope of the ceasefire and how uranium enrichment will be monitored.

The announcement comes at a critical time, as the Middle East conflict has already triggered economic instability worldwide, including warnings from Philippine officials that hundreds of thousands of overseas Filipino workers could lose jobs if the war continues. The ceasefire, if sustained, could provide temporary relief to global markets and migrant workers alike.

Trump’s declaration underscores his administration’s confidence in the deal, but whether the truce leads to lasting peace or merely a pause in hostilities remains uncertain.
