From Makati's lost icon to BGC’s billion-peso comeback: InterContinental Manila rises again after 15 years

MARCH 16, 2026 — After fifteen long years, the InterContinental brand is staging a comeback in Manila — this time not in Makati, but in Bonifacio Global City. The announcement from IHG Hotels & Resorts that a new 212-room InterContinental Manila will rise in BGC by 2032 has stirred equal parts nostalgia and curiosity.

For those who remember, the old InterCon in Makati wasn’t just a hotel — it was a cultural landmark. Opened in 1969, it stood for nearly half a century as a symbol of cosmopolitan Manila, hosting everything from diplomatic events to society weddings. Its closure in 2015 felt like the end of an era, a quiet farewell to Makati’s reign as the undisputed capital of luxury hospitality.

Now, the brand’s rebirth in BGC reflects the shifting geography of power and prestige in Metro Manila. The Fort has become the new playground of multinationals, the Philippine Stock Exchange, and the country’s rising elite. The move is more than just a change of address — it’s a statement: luxury has migrated east.

IHG is partnering with Keyland Corp., Philippine Realty and Holdings Corp., and Greenhills Properties Inc. to bring the project to life.

Jose Ma. Montinola, president of Keyland, captured the sentiment: “Partnering with IHG to bring a globally recognized brand back to Manila is an exciting new chapter.”

He added that the project aims to honor the brand’s history while setting a new benchmark for luxury.

The planned amenities — ballroom, spa, health club, outdoor pool, and specialty bar — signal that this won’t just be another hotel. It’s designed to be a lifestyle hub, catering to both the corporate crowd and the leisure market. And let’s be real, in a city where luxury condos sprout like mushrooms, a hotel of this stature could redefine what “high-end” means in BGC.

So what does this say about us as a city? The InterCon’s return is not just about nostalgia or branding but about how Manila continues to reinvent itself. From Makati’s old-world charm to BGC’s glass-and-steel ambition, we’re watching the city’s identity shift before our eyes.

The public impact? Expect rising property values, more traffic (yes, brace yourselves), and a new magnet for global travelers. For locals, it’s a reminder that Manila is still in the game, still capable of attracting world-class names, and still evolving in ways that challenge our sense of place.

So when the InterCon throws open its doors in BGC, will we be stepping back into the glam of yesterday or diving headfirst into a shinier, louder Manila of tomorrow?
