CEBU CITY, January 8, 2026 — Cebu City officials confirmed that continuous search and rescue operations are underway after a landslide hit the Binaliw landfill, collapsing structures and burying workers under tons of garbage.

Mayor Nestor Archival said disaster response teams, medical personnel, and heavy equipment were deployed immediately. “Based on preliminary reports, there are people trapped, and medical assistance and emergency support are already on site,” Archival stated. He urged residents to remain calm and avoid the area while responders carry out their tasks.

Initial reports from the landslide at the Barangay Binaliw landfill in Cebu City confirmed that at least one person lost their life while six others sustained injuries. Rescue teams managed to pull nine workers from the debris, who were immediately rushed to hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition.

Authorities estimate that between 20 to 30 individuals may have been trapped when the landfill’s material recovery facility gave way. Disturbing videos circulating online captured residents crying out for help as nearby houses were engulfed by the cascading pile of garbage.

Round-the-Clock Operations

Rescue teams from the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Bureau of Fire Protection, and police are working non-stop to locate survivors. Heavy machinery is being used to clear debris, while medical teams remain on standby to treat the injured.

Mayor Archival said he is personally monitoring the situation and coordinating further actions. “I will be heading to the Binaliw landfill to check the situation myself and ensure proper coordination,” he added.

The Binaliw landfill, operated by Prime Integrated Waste Solutions Inc.,has long faced criticism from environmental groups over safety and capacity issues. Thursday’s collapse has reignited calls for stricter monitoring of landfill operations and better disaster preparedness in urban areas.

Councilor Joel Garganera, chair of the City Council’s environment committee, said the incident highlights the urgent need to review landfill safety protocols.
