Kanlaon Volcano on the move — Is the region ready for possible eruptions?

NEGROS Island, Philippines — The activity of Mount Kanlaon, one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes, has once again drawn attention after the Department of Science and Technology–PHIVOLCS recorded 45 volcanic earthquakes from midnight to the morning of January 14. These tremors, ranging in magnitude from 0.6 to 3.9 and occurring at depths of up to 13 kilometers beneath the volcano’s northwestern flank, were felt in nearby cities including La Carlota, Bacolod, and Canlaon. PHIVOLCS also noted persistently high sulfur dioxide emissions—an important indicator of magma movement rising beneath the volcano.
Alert Level 2 remains in effect, signaling ongoing unrest that could lead to sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, and possibly weak to moderate explosive activity. While this does not yet indicate an imminent major eruption, it is a clear reminder that Kanlaon is far from quiet.
Beyond the scientific data lies a deeper concern: preparedness and public awareness. Volcanic unrest often unfolds gradually, and familiarity can breed complacency, especially for communities that have lived near Kanlaon for generations. Earthquakes that last only seconds may be dismissed as routine, but history shows that small signals can precede sudden and dangerous events. The challenge is ensuring that early warnings translate into real readiness—clear evacuation plans, informed local governments, and communities that trust science-based advisories over rumors or false alarms.
In a country frequently tested by natural hazards, Kanlaon’s renewed activity underscores the importance of disaster literacy and proactive governance. Monitoring is not just about instruments and data; it is about how society responds before a crisis escalates.
As seismic activity continues beneath Kanlaon, the question remains: are we truly listening to the warnings of nature, or will action only come when it is already too late? (Larawan: rexlimlim / Instagram)
