PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan — A small gown rental shop in Barangay San Miguel, Puerto Princesa City, was reduced to ashes on the morning of Thursday, January 22, highlighting the fragile line between hard-earned success and sudden loss. The shop was owned by Rodolfo Campos, a former Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), who built the business using years of savings from working abroad—a story familiar to many Filipino families.

According to Campos, he was inside his adjacent repair shop when he noticed flames rapidly consuming the rented gowns displayed in the living room of their house, which also served as the rental space. Realizing the danger, he immediately woke his sleeping child and his child’s friends and rushed them out of the building. In an instinctive but risky attempt to save what he had built, Campos tried to extinguish the fire himself. He suffered burns on his head, back, and both arms.

By the time firefighters and responders managed to control the blaze, nothing from the gown rental shop could be salvaged. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and the family has yet to determine the total cost of the damage. While authorities confirmed that the fire did not spread to nearby houses, the emotional and financial toll on the Campos family is undeniable.

Beyond the immediate tragedy, this incident raises deeper questions about the vulnerability of small, home-based businesses—especially those built by returning OFWs. For many, these enterprises represent not just income, but the fulfillment of years of sacrifice abroad. One fire, however, can erase a lifetime of labor in minutes. This reality invites a broader discourse on fire safety, access to insurance, and stronger community and government support systems for micro-entrepreneurs. When the savings of our modern-day heroes can disappear overnight, are we doing enough to protect the dreams they bring home? (Larawan mula sa: 103.1 Brigada News FM - Palawan / Facebook)
