Should all officials reveal their wealth? — Belgica challenges public transparency amid VP Sara scrutiny

MANILA, Philippines — Former Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission Chair Greco Belgica issued a bold challenge to Philippine government officials following statements by Congressman Paolo Ortega that the Congress may review Vice President Sara Duterte’s bank accounts as part of potential impeachment proceedings.

Belgica publicly expressed support for scrutinizing the Vice President’s finances but insisted that such transparency should not be limited to her alone. “Bank accounts ni VP Sara sisilipin daw ng Kongreso. Magandang mungkahi ’yan. GO! Pero dapat pumayag din sila na gawin na sa kanilang lahat,” he said, calling for all government officials — from the President down to barangay leaders — to release their bank records and other assets to the public.

He further suggested that not only bank accounts but also hidden wealth in safes, condominiums, and other properties should be disclosed. According to Belgica, this is essential for the public to determine who has amassed wealth while in office and to ensure that any investigation into alleged wrongdoing is fair and credible.

Belgica’s challenge arrives amid growing debate over impeachment procedures, accountability, and public trust in government institutions. His remarks touch on a fundamental issue in governance: whether selective transparency can achieve justice or if equitable standards for all officials are required.

The question remains: Can public trust truly be achieved if only some officials reveal their assets, or must transparency be universal to ensure accountability? (Larawan mula: Greco Belgica, Inday Sara Duterte / Facebook)
