QUEZON CITY, April 20, 2026 — Twenty-two passengers were injured after a modern jeepney slammed into a concrete post in Quezon City on Sunday afternoon, April 19, 2026, with police saying the 22-year-old driver admitted he had briefly fallen asleep at the wheel.

The accident occurred at the corner of P. Tuazon Boulevard and 15th Avenue in Barangay San Roque, according to the Quezon City Police District Traffic Enforcement Unit (QCPD-DTEU). Lt. Col. Josef Geoffrey Lim confirmed that one victim sustained a serious leg injury, while six of the injured were minors.

Investigators said the driver told police he had “napapikit, nakatulog” before losing control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into the post. The impact left the front portion of the jeepney mangled, with passengers rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

CCTV footage reviewed by authorities showed the jeepney overtaking another vehicle moments before the collision, then veering uncontrollably into the post. The footage highlighted the severity of the crash, with the post piercing near the driver’s seat.

The incident has reignited concerns about driver fatigue and road safety in Metro Manila, particularly with the increasing number of modern jeepneys operating under the government’s transport modernization program. Police said charges may be filed against the driver pending further investigation.

Local officials reminded operators to ensure drivers are well-rested before taking long shifts, stressing that fatigue remains a major cause of road accidents. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is expected to review the case and assess whether additional safety measures should be implemented for modern jeepney fleets.

The crash underscores the urgent need for stricter monitoring of public utility vehicle operations, as authorities continue to push for safer and more reliable transport systems in the capital.
