BATANES — The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) announced on March 23, 2026, that it will deploy a NASA-evaluated portable AI-powered X-ray system to Batanes, giving residents access to advanced medical screening technology previously tested for use in outer space.

The device, known as REMEX KA6, was selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during a rigorous evaluation process where it was tested alongside other high-end imaging systems for potential use by astronauts. It emerged as the top performer, demonstrating reliability, precision, and durability under demanding conditions.

Unlike traditional bulky X-ray machines, the REMEX KA6 is ultra-portable, battery-operated, and weighs only 3.5 kilograms, making it ideal for deployment in remote and hard-to-reach areas such as the islands and mountainous communities of Batanes. Health workers will be able to carry the device during medical missions, ensuring that residents who often face limited access to diagnostic facilities can benefit from world-class imaging technology.

PCSO officials emphasized that the rollout supports the healthcare agenda of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who has prioritized expanding access to modern medical services in underserved regions. “This initiative brings cutting-edge technology closer to Filipinos who need it most,” the agency said in a statement, highlighting its commitment to bridging healthcare gaps in geographically isolated provinces.

The deployment of the REMEX KA6 in Batanes is expected to significantly improve early detection of respiratory illnesses, bone fractures, and other medical conditions that require imaging. By integrating artificial intelligence, the system can assist doctors in interpreting results more efficiently, reducing diagnostic errors and speeding up treatment decisions.

Local officials welcomed the announcement, noting that Batanes residents often face challenges in accessing specialized medical equipment due to the province’s isolation and limited hospital facilities. The portable AI X-ray system is seen as a breakthrough in ensuring equitable healthcare delivery.

The PCSO confirmed that the device will first be used in Basco and Sabtang during upcoming medical missions, with plans to expand its use across the province. The agency also hinted at future deployments in other remote areas of the Philippines, depending on the success of the Batanes rollout.

This initiative underscores the growing role of advanced technology in public health, as the Philippines leverages innovations tested by NASA to strengthen its healthcare system. For Batanes, the arrival of the REMEX KA6 marks a new era of accessible, high-quality medical diagnostics for its residents.
