AZERBAIJAN — Regional tensions escalated after reports emerged that drones struck an airport area in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan region on March 5, 2026, raising fears of a possible geopolitical flare-up in the South Caucasus.

According to initial reports, one drone exploded near the terminal of Nakhchivan International Airport, while another reportedly crashed in a nearby civilian residential area. The incident caused injuries among several residents and resulted in structural damage to nearby facilities.

Authorities in Azerbaijan quickly accused neighboring Iran of being behind the drone attack, escalating diplomatic tensions between the two countries. In response, the Azerbaijani government summoned the Iranian ambassador to demand an explanation for the incident.

Iran, however, strongly denied any involvement in the alleged drone strike. Iranian officials insisted that they had not launched any attacks against Azerbaijan and rejected the accusations as unfounded.

The incident occurred in the semi-autonomous exclave of Nakhchivan, a strategically sensitive region that borders Iran, Turkey, and Armenia. Analysts say that even a single security incident in the area can quickly trigger broader geopolitical tensions due to the region’s complex political and military dynamics.

Security experts warn that if accusations continue without clear evidence, the situation could further strain relations not only between Iran and Azerbaijan but also among neighboring powers that have strategic interests in the South Caucasus. The possibility of miscalculation, misinformation, or covert involvement by third parties also cannot be ruled out as investigations continue.

As authorities work to determine the origin of the drones and assess the full extent of the damage, the incident raises broader questions about regional stability. In an era where drone warfare has become a new geopolitical tool, one critical question remains: Are incidents like this isolated acts of aggression—or early warning signs of a much larger conflict waiting to unfold?
