DAMMAM, Saudi Arabia — Saudi Aramco’s Ras Tanura refinery, the largest oil processing facility in the kingdom, was struck by a drone attack on March 2, 2026, forcing a temporary shutdown and sparking a limited fire that has since been brought under control.

The incident marks a significant escalation in regional tensions as Iran expands retaliatory strikes following recent US-Israeli military actions.

According to Saudi officials, no injuries were reported, and firefighting teams quickly contained the blaze. The Ministry of Energy confirmed that debris from intercepted drones caused the fire within the refinery’s vicinity. Operations were halted as a precaution while damage assessments were carried out.

The Ras Tanura complex, with a refining capacity of 550,000 barrels per day, is considered Aramco’s crown jewel and one of the world’s most critical energy hubs. Its shutdown immediately sent shockwaves through global markets, with Brent crude prices surging to $80 per barrel, an 8–9 percent jump, while ICE gasoil futures spiked more than 20 percent.

Industry analysts warn that the attack underscores vulnerabilities in global energy infrastructure and could trigger cascading disruptions across shipping and supply chains in the Gulf. The refinery’s strategic importance lies not only in crude processing but also in petrochemical integration, making it central to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 diversification plans.

Regional observers note that the strike represents one of the most direct assaults on Saudi Arabia’s energy lifeline in recent years, intensifying fears of broader conflict in the Middle East. While Aramco has assured that contingency measures are in place to stabilize supply, the incident highlights the fragility of global oil markets amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
