The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) clarified that the documentary “Lost Sabungeros” was neither rejected nor denied review, countering claims made in the film’s new trailer that it had been “twice denied.” The agency said producers were only asked to submit additional requirements before evaluation could proceed.
MANILA, Philippines — March 6, 2026 — The MTRCB issued an official statement on Friday following the release of the trailer for “Lost Sabungeros: The Complete Story,” which alleged that the film had been denied review twice by the board.
The trailer also recalled the cancellation of its Cinemalaya premiere in August 2024 due to “security concerns” and teased “never-before-seen footage” and “new revelations.”
In its clarification, the MTRCB stressed that the film was not rejected. “Instead, the producers were asked to submit the documentary requirements needed for the Board to properly evaluate the film,” the agency said. Among the requirements was a certification confirming that the subject matter was not part of any pending case.
The documentary, produced by GMA Public Affairs, investigates the disappearance of cockfighters or “sabungeros” and has been the subject of public interest since screenings at QCinema in November 2024.
However, GMA Public Affairs disputed the MTRCB’s latest statement, pointing to official communications from February 2026 where the board explicitly said it was “declining to review and classify” the film for a second time.
“From your own words, you declined to review The Lost Sabungeros a second time,” GMA Public Affairs senior vice president Nessa Valdellon said.
The conflicting accounts have fueled debate over transparency and censorship in Philippine media. While the MTRCB insists the film was not denied review, producers argue that official records show otherwise.
The controversy comes amid heightened public interest in the unresolved cases of missing sabungeros, with families continuing to demand justice.
As of now, “Lost Sabungeros: The Complete Story” remains a highly anticipated investigative documentary, with its updated version promising new revelations. The dispute between MTRCB and GMA Public Affairs underscores the tension between regulatory oversight and press freedom, raising questions about how sensitive cases are handled in the public sphere.
This issue is expected to remain in the spotlight as screenings and public discussions continue, with both sides standing firm on their accounts of what transpired during the review process.
