MANILA — Inihayag ni Davao City Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte na si dating Senador Antonio Trillanes IV ay ipinadala ng gobyerno ng Pilipinas upang magsagawa ng “welfare check” kay dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte sa International Criminal Court (ICC) detention center sa The Hague, Netherlands.

Ang pahayag ay kasunod ng matinding batikos ni Vice President Sara Duterte sa Marcos administration dahil sa umano’y “intrusive” na pagbisita sa kanyang ama. Aniya, isinailalim si Duterte sa laboratory tests matapos mawalan ng malay sa loob ng kulungan. “So it is Trillanes who was sent by the drug-addled government to welfare-check PRRD? You could spread your virus there as you have not been injected with anti-rabies shot,” ani Pulong Duterte sa isang social media post.

Kinumpirma ng abogado ni Duterte, si Nicholas Kaufman, na may insidente ng pagkawala ng malay ang dating pangulo at dinala ito sa ospital para sa pagsusuri sa posibleng cranial at brain injury. “None of this was reported either to the Defense team or to the family in real time,” ani Kaufman. Dagdag pa niya, “All of these conditions are now known to the Marcos administration after its representatives conducted a surreptitious visit to the ICC detention center to gather intelligence under the pretense of offering supposed ‘care and concern’ for the welfare of one its citizens”.

Mariin ding itinanggi ni Kaufman ang interpretasyon na pumayag ang gobyerno sa interim release ni Duterte. “Let Castro apply her masterful skills of rhetoric to explaining how her own administration, little more than a year later, ejected the former president from his own country denying him his constitutional right to a court hearing in the Philippines,” dagdag pa niya, tinutukoy si Malacañang press officer Clarissa Castro.

Sa kabila ng mga kontrobersya, nanindigan ang Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) na ang naturang pagbisita ay bahagi ng tungkulin ng embahada sa ilalim ng Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. “This is a duty of all Philippine Foreign Service Posts and is no different from what the DFA does for other Filipino citizens who are in detention abroad,” ayon sa DFA statement noong Setyembre 24.

Sa ngayon, nananatiling nakakulong si Duterte sa ICC detention center habang hinihintay ang desisyon sa kanyang hiling na pansamantalang paglaya. Patuloy namang tumitindi ang tensyon sa pagitan ng pamilya Duterte at ng kasalukuyang administrasyon kaugnay ng isyu.
