CAMARINES SUR — A deadly road accident claimed four lives and left at least 23 others injured after a passenger bus plunged into a ravine along the Andaya Highway in Barangay Magais 1, Del Gallego, Camarines Sur in the early hours of Friday, December 26, 2025.
According to initial reports, the DLTB bus—bearing plate number UA479 and body number 6H—was traveling from Cubao, Quezon City to Gubat, Sorsogon when the incident occurred at around 2:00 a.m. Authorities said the bus reportedly lost stability and swerved before falling into an estimated 10-meter-deep ravine. The impact caused severe damage to the vehicle and resulted in chaos among passengers who were mostly asleep at the time of the crash.
Three of the fatalities were identified as women, while one was male. Emergency responders immediately rushed the injured passengers to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Rescue operations were conducted under challenging conditions due to the terrain and darkness at the crash site. As of this writing, authorities are still confirming the identities of the victims and assessing the full extent of the injuries.
Investigators are now looking into possible factors behind the accident, including driver fatigue, road conditions, vehicle condition, and speed. Long-distance overnight trips are common during the holiday season, but they also pose heightened risks, especially on winding highways such as Andaya Highway, which has long been known for fatal accidents.
Beyond the tragic numbers, this incident once again brings attention to persistent issues in public transportation safety in the Philippines. While buses remain a vital and affordable means of travel for many Filipinos, recurring accidents raise serious questions about enforcement of safety standards, driver rest regulations, and vehicle maintenance. As families mourn the sudden loss of loved ones just days after Christmas, the tragedy serves as a painful reminder that road safety must be treated as a national priority. Stronger oversight, stricter compliance, and genuine accountability are essential to prevent similar incidents—so that passengers can travel without fear of never reaching their destination alive.
