DECEMBER 29, 2025 — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has released its official roster of fireworks that passed national safety standards, urging Filipinos to be vigilant as the country braces for the 2026 New Year revelry.

The agency reminded the public to buy only from licensed manufacturers and to check for the Bureau of Philippine Standards’ Philippine Standard Quality Mark on packaging. The full list of approved fireworks can be accessed here: DTI Bureau of Philippine Standards' Post

Authorities stressed that instructions must be read carefully before lighting any firework. The DTI also warned against retrieving firecrackers that failed to ignite, noting that these are often reused as pranks that can cause serious harm.

Practical safety measures were also highlighted:

  • keep doors and windows shut to block stray fireworks
  • maintain distance when watching displays
  • use protective gear such as goggles and long poles when lighting fireworks

The agency further advised wearing cotton or denim clothing instead of polyester, and shoes rather than slippers, to reduce burn risks. Buckets of water and first aid kits should be on standby for emergencies.

The Department of Health reported 91 firework-related injuries nationwide as of late December, a figure that continues to climb as celebrations near.

Tradition vs. safety

Despite repeated warnings year in and year out, why do such accidents persist? Is stricter enforcement needed, or does the responsibility fall squarely on households to change unsafe traditions?

Many Filipinos continue to weigh the balance between festive culture and public safety. It must be admitted that fireworks remain a symbol of celebration … but at what cost? Should communities consider safer alternatives, or will the thrill of firecrackers always outweigh the risks?

The DTI’s reminder is clear: safety must not be compromised for spectacle. As the countdown to 2026 begins, the challenge lies in whether Filipinos will heed the call or continue to gamble with danger.
