JANUARY 1, 2026 — A motorcycle pursuit in Malabon City on New Year’s Eve led police to a cargo yard in Barangay Maysilo, where authorities uncovered an estimated ₱1.5 billion worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes.
The chase began when two riders were flagged by the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) for not wearing helmets. Instead of stopping, they sped off, prompting operatives to pursue them. One rider was caught while the other escaped.
Inside the yard, officers found 18 container vans filled with imported cigarettes. Police officials said the containers were already open when they arrived, and they suspect the riders may have been attempting to steal from the site.
The Bureau of Customs Enforcement Group confirmed the cigarettes were imported and noted that investigators are still tracing ownership. Authorities have already identified the operator of the cargo yard and the registered owner of the truck linked to the shipment.
Three yard employees were also taken into custody after failing to present documentation for the goods. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, charges may be filed under the Anti-Agricultural Sabotage Act.
The underground trade is still thriving, apparently
The discovery leaves people wondering how something this big could slip through the cracks. If billions worth of smuggled goods can sit in a yard unnoticed, what does that say about the checks at our ports and warehouses? Who’s really profiting from this hidden trade, and just how wide does the network reach?
Turns out this isn’t just a motorcycle chase. It’s a loud reminder that the fight against the underground economy is far from over.
