LAGUNA, Philippines — The province of Laguna reported 71 firecracker-related injuries between December 25, 2025, and January 1, 2026, with the majority classified as minor cases, according to the provincial government.
San Pedro City recorded the highest number of incidents at 24, followed by JP Rizal District Hospital in Calamba with 12 cases and Laguna Medical Center in Sta. Cruz with 10. Provincial Information Officer Danilo Lucas noted that these figures, while concerning, demonstrate that ongoing safety campaigns and public reminders are having a positive impact.
“While the majority of injuries were minor, this is a clear signal that the public must remain vigilant,” Lucas said, urging residents to seek medical attention immediately if an injury occurs.
The report highlights the recurring challenge of firecracker-related injuries in the Philippines during the holiday season. Despite widespread awareness campaigns, fireworks continue to pose serious risks, particularly to children and inexperienced users. Each year, hospitals brace for the surge of patients, emphasizing that even a moment’s negligence can result in burns, lacerations, or long-term disability.
Beyond statistics, the annual pattern raises a broader question about public safety culture. Are reminders and warnings sufficient, or should stricter regulations and enforcement be implemented to protect citizens? While advocacy for responsible use is vital, incidents like those in Laguna suggest that a mix of education, regulation, and community vigilance may be necessary to prevent unnecessary injuries. As Laguna authorities continue to monitor the situation, the message remains clear: caution and preparedness are essential, and safety must always take precedence over celebration.
