JANUARY 5, 2026 — The New Year in the U.S. didn’t just bring fireworks — it also brought a wave of immigration arrests. And yes, a Filipina was among those caught in the net.
Meet Karen Empaynado, 33, who U.S. Homeland Security tagged as one of ten “criminal illegal aliens” arrested during ICE’s New Year crackdown. Her record is long: burglary, grand theft, battery, and multiple arrests dating back to 2011. Authorities say she’s been in and out of custody for more than a decade, with her most recent arrest tied to felony battery charges.
She wasn’t alone. ICE also rounded up undocumented immigrants from Mexico, Honduras, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba — all with criminal records.
The sweep reflects the tougher immigration stance under President Donald Trump’s second term, where mass deportations and stricter enforcement have become the norm.
Now, here’s the bigger picture: What does this mean for Filipinos abroad? While Empaynado’s case is clearly tied to her criminal history, it raises questions about perception. Will hardworking, law-abiding kababayans also feel the ripple effects of suspicion? Does one person’s downfall cast a shadow on the image of Filipinos in the U.S.?
It’s worth noting that immigration enforcement doesn’t just target those with records — the climate has become more tense for many immigrants, legal or otherwise. For Filipinos chasing the American dream, this is a reminder that the road is getting tougher.
So let’s talk about it. Should we see this as an isolated case, or as a wake-up call about how Filipinos are viewed abroad? How do we protect the reputation of millions of OFWs who sacrifice daily to uplift their families back home?
One woman’s downfall should not define us, but it should wake us up: the world will judge Filipinos not only by our successes, but also by our failures.
Remember, one person’s mistake can stain an entire nation’s name.
