MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is reportedly in good health, though doctors have advised him to take a one-week rest, according to Executive Secretary Ralph Recto.

Speaking in an ambush interview at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Day 2026 on Thursday, January 29, Recto revealed that the President had lost weight due to consuming mostly broth in recent days. “The President is in stable condition, but his doctors strongly advised him to rest for a week,” Recto said.

Recto also explained that the President was unable to attend the PNP’s anniversary celebration because he prioritized reviewing and signing urgent government documents. In his stead, Recto represented the President at the event. “The President’s health comes first, and while he is committed to his duties, even leaders need to pause when advised by medical professionals,” Recto emphasized.

This revelation highlights a recurring challenge in governance: balancing the demands of leadership with personal health. The pressures of public office often compel leaders to overlook their well-being, yet sustained productivity and sound decision-making require a healthy mind and body. Recto’s disclosure also raises questions about public expectations of accessibility and duty versus the human limits of those in power.

As the President recovers, observers are reminded that even national leaders are not immune to the effects of stress and overwork. Should public officials be expected to step back for health reasons, even in the midst of national responsibilities? (Larawan mula sa: Ralph Recto, Bongbong Marcos / Facebook)
