MANILA, Philippines — Several Filipino lawmakers drew public attention after sharing photos of themselves wearing the hijab in observance of World Hijab Day 2026, a global event that seeks to promote understanding, respect, and empowerment of Muslim women. Representatives Leila de Lima, Sara Elago, Renee Co, and Senator Risa Hontiveros described their gesture as an act of solidarity with the Muslim community and a recognition of the identity, dignity, and rights of Muslim women.

In her statement, De Lima emphasized the theme of this year’s celebration—“Celebrating Identity, Empowering Women, and Advancing Inclusive Growth.” For the lawmakers, wearing the hijab was not merely symbolic attire but an expression of support for religious freedom, women’s choice, and cultural respect in a country marked by diversity.

World Hijab Day, observed annually on February 1, was founded to encourage women of all backgrounds to experience wearing the hijab for a day, fostering empathy and dialogue while challenging stereotypes often attached to Muslim women. In the Philippine context, where Muslims remain a minority and are frequently subject to misunderstanding, the lawmakers’ participation carries political and social weight. It sends a message that inclusivity should not remain abstract rhetoric but must be visibly affirmed by those in positions of power.

However, this act also opens space for a broader and more critical conversation. While symbolic gestures can spark awareness and normalize respect, they are not substitutes for concrete policy action. Muslim communities in the Philippines continue to face systemic challenges—from access to social services to representation and protection against discrimination. The wearing of a hijab, therefore, invites reflection on whether solidarity can extend beyond moments of visibility into sustained legislative and institutional support. Ultimately, the gesture highlights a deeper question about leadership and allyship: Should public solidarity remain symbolic, or should it compel leaders to translate empathy into lasting, structural change that genuinely uplifts marginalized communities?
