Marcoleta’s KIG remark sparks outrage, Palace says no treason

FEBRUARY 10, 2026 — Malacañang has spoken: no treason in Senator Rodante Marcoleta’s controversial statement on the West Philippine Sea. The Palace clarified that treason requires an actual state of war — something the Philippines is not in.

Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro stressed that while Filipinos enjoy freedom of expression, the President’s stance is firm: “Wala pong anumang bahagi ng teritoryo natin o anumang interest ang isusurrender sa anumang foreign power.”

(None of our territory or interests will be surrendered to any foreign power.)

Marcoleta earlier said the Kalayaan Group of Islands (KIG) is not part of the country’s exclusive economic zone and should be “let go.” That remark sparked outrage, with critics accusing him of undermining national sovereignty. He later clarified, claiming his words were taken out of context and insisting he never suggested surrender.

Now, why do statements like these hit a nerve? Because the West Philippine Sea isn’t just about maps and maritime law — it’s about national pride, food security, and the livelihoods of Filipino fisherfolk. Every word from our leaders carries weight, especially when China’s presence in the area continues to stir tension.

The Palace’s reassurance may calm some nerves, but it also raises another issue: Are we too quick to dismiss controversial remarks as “misunderstood”? Or should public officials be more careful, knowing their words can ripple across diplomatic waters?

The WPS debate isn’t abstract — it’s about whether our fishermen can cast their nets freely, whether our children will inherit a country that defends its territory, and whether our leaders truly stand firm against foreign pressure.

So, what do we make of Marcoleta’s statement? Misplaced, misunderstood, or a wake-up call for us to demand clarity and consistency from those in power?
