IBA, Zambales — Authorities arrested a 30-year-old Mongolian national in Zambales over alleged espionage activities, raising concerns about national security.
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) identified the suspect as Boldbaatar Bold-Erdene, who was taken into custody at an aviation school in Barangay Lipay Dingin, Iba, with support from the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
According to BI intelligence, Bold-Erdene was a graduating student at the aviation academy but was tagged as an “undesirable alien” after being linked to suspicious activities. Investigators said he allegedly took aerial photographs of Iba Airport and the nearby Palauig River, locations considered sensitive due to their proximity to strategic facilities.
“Foreign nationals staying in the country must strictly follow our laws. Any activity that poses risks to public interest and safety will not be tolerated,” the Bureau of Immigration said in a statement.
Officials added that Bold-Erdene’s background raised further alarm, noting that he is a trained pilot with military experience, having studied at the Defense University of Mongolia and the Civil Aviation University of China.
The BI stressed that espionage-linked activities are a serious threat, especially when involving foreigners with specialized training. Bold-Erdene is currently under BI custody and faces deportation proceedings. Authorities are also coordinating with intelligence agencies to determine the extent of his activities and possible connections to foreign entities.
The arrest has sparked discussions on the need for tighter monitoring of foreign students enrolled in aviation and technical schools, given the potential risks to national security. Officials assured the public that surveillance and enforcement measures will continue to be strengthened to prevent similar incidents.
