BAYAMBANG, Pangasinan — A newborn baby was discovered buried alive in a cornfield in Barangay Sanlibo, Bayambang on Tuesday morning, February 17, 2026, prompting police to arrest the infant’s mother on charges of infanticide.

According to reports from the Badian Municipal Police Station, a local businessman noticed bloodstains in his farmland and immediately alerted barangay officials. Together with residents, they searched the area and found a black plastic bag buried near a mango tree.

Inside was a newborn baby, still alive but in critical condition. The infant was rushed to Bayambang District Hospital, where doctors attempted to save him, but he was later declared dead due to cardiorespiratory arrest.

Authorities identified the mother as a 32-year-old security guard and resident of Barangay Sanlibo. She was taken into custody and subjected to medical examination before being charged. Police said a formal complaint for infanticide is being prepared against her.

The shocking incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with local officials urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. Law enforcement stressed that such acts are punishable under Philippine law and emphasized the importance of community awareness in protecting vulnerable lives.

This case underscores the urgent need for stronger support systems for mothers in crisis and highlights the role of barangay vigilance in uncovering crimes that might otherwise go unnoticed. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident while the suspect remains in police custody.
