River overflows in Bislig City — Seasonal flooding or growing climate vulnerability?

BISLIG CITY, Surigao del Sur — Heavy rains caused the Post 1 Tabon River in Bislig to overflow Friday morning, February 20, leaving portions of nearby roads temporarily impassable to motorists.

According to PAGASA, the continuous downpour was brought by a shear line affecting parts of Mindanao and the Visayas. The weather disturbance saturated surrounding soil and raised river levels, causing waters to spill into adjacent roadways and disrupt transportation in the area.

Local authorities monitored the situation and advised residents and travelers to avoid flooded routes while rainfall persisted. Although no injuries were immediately reported, events like this often strain daily activities — delaying work, school, and delivery of goods, especially in communities where major roads double as vital economic lifelines.

Flooding during prolonged rain is not unusual in river communities, yet residents increasingly note how quickly waters now rise and spread. Environmental observers point out that deforestation, land development, and changing rainfall patterns can intensify flooding even during non-typhoon weather systems. What used to be manageable overflow events may now carry higher risk as waterways struggle to handle heavier runoff.

The incident reflects a recurring reality: communities frequently adapt day by day, but long-term mitigation requires improved drainage planning, watershed protection, and disaster preparedness. When rivers overflow more often during ordinary rain events, is it simply nature at work — or a warning about how landscapes and climate are changing?
