FEBRUARY 23, 2026 — Twenty-four Filipinos thought they were chasing opportunities abroad. Instead, they found themselves trapped in Cambodia’s “love scam” operations — forced to flirt with foreigners online, only to funnel them into shady cryptocurrency schemes and online casinos. On Valentine’s Day, these victims finally came home, landing at NAIA Terminal 1 on a Philippine Airlines flight from Phnom Penh.
The Bureau of Immigration revealed that most of the victims were in their twenties, lured by online job ads promising high salaries. One woman was even sent to Brunei, showing how far these networks stretch.
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado asserted, “This is not legitimate employment. This is organized fraud with international victims. We will not allow our country to be used as a recruitment ground for global scam operations.”
These scams aren’t just about duping foreigners. They prey on Filipinos desperate for better pay, dangling the illusion of “easy money” abroad. The victims end up exploited, stripped of dignity, and used as pawns in a global fraud machine. It’s a sobering reminder of how vulnerable our workforce is when dreams of greener pastures collide with ruthless syndicates.
And yet, this story also sparks hope. The swift repatriation shows that authorities are stepping up, and awareness is growing.
But let’s be real — scammers will keep innovating, and recruitment pitches will only get slicker. The challenge now is how we, as a nation, protect our kababayans from falling for these traps.
Filipinos have always been known for resilience and resourcefulness. But resilience shouldn’t mean surviving exploitation. It should mean building safeguards so no one has to endure it in the first place.
A lot of us dream of something bigger, often beyond our shores — so the question is, how far would you go, and what would you give up, to make that dream real?
