Street-level drug suspect arrested in Cabuyao buy-bust — Do crackdowns deter the trade?

Robel A. AlmoguerraIpinost noong 2026-02-27 22:32:39 Street-level drug suspect arrested in Cabuyao buy-bust — Do crackdowns deter the trade?

CABUYAO, Laguna A 42-year-old man known by the alias “Janer” was arrested during a pre-dawn buy-bust operation conducted by the Cabuyao Component City Police Station at around 4:00 a.m. in Barangay Mamatid, Cabuyao City.

Authorities reported that the suspect allegedly sold suspected shabu to a poseur buyer, prompting immediate arrest by operatives. Seized during the operation were seven sachets of suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride weighing approximately 25 grams, with an estimated street value of ₱170,000. Police also recovered marked buy-bust money, ₱3,200 in cash, and a 9mm Glock 17 pistol with a magazine containing four rounds of ammunition.

The suspect is set to face charges for violations of Republic Act No. 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, as well as Republic Act No. 10591 for alleged illegal possession of a firearm.

Police officials described the suspect as operating at the street level of the drug trade, part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal narcotics distribution in the city. Law enforcement agencies have intensified surveillance and intelligence-driven operations, particularly in barangays previously flagged for drug-related activities.

While authorities view the arrest as a success, the broader challenge remains persistent. Street-level operations often target individual suspects, but critics argue that deeper networks and supply chains must also be addressed to make a lasting impact. As Cabuyao continues its anti-drug campaign, a crucial question arises: Are repeated street-level arrests enough to weaken the drug trade, or is a broader strategy needed to truly dismantle it?
