MANILA, Philippines — Meralco PowerGen Corporation said geopolitical tensions in the Middle East highlight the importance of maintaining a reliable energy supply and strengthening long-term energy security in the Philippines.
In a media statement, the company said global fuel price movements and geopolitical developments continue to influence the energy sector and supply chains worldwide. It emphasized that power generators must remain focused on operational discipline and system reliability during periods of uncertainty.
Meralco PowerGen said its generation facilities remain operational with high availability due to regular plant maintenance and efficient operations. The company added that it currently has sufficient fuel supply to support existing facilities and help meet electricity demand while contributing to grid stability.
The company also pointed to ongoing investments aimed at strengthening energy security in the region, including large-scale renewable energy developments. Among these is the planned MTerra Solar project, a 3,500 megawatt peak solar facility paired with a 4,500 megawatt hour battery energy storage system, which the company said could serve as an alternative to mid-merit power supply traditionally dependent on imported fuels.
Meralco PowerGen said it continues to optimize the performance of its diversified generation portfolio, which currently has a net sellable capacity of about 5,069.7 megawatts from both traditional and renewable sources.
The company added that it is advancing energy-efficiency initiatives to encourage responsible electricity use and help manage power demand, as part of broader efforts to build a more resilient and sustainable power system.
Meralco PowerGen President and CEO Emmanuel V. Rubio said the company will continue working with government agencies, industry partners, and stakeholders to support a stable and reliable electricity supply in the region.
