The Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched a nationwide probe into the sudden closure of several gas stations amid soaring fuel prices, warning that any attempt at hoarding or profiteering will be met with police action. The investigation comes as global oil markets reel from Middle East tensions, pushing pump prices higher across the Philippines.
MANILA, Philippines — PNP Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. confirmed on Sunday, March 15, that police units have been ordered to intensify monitoring of gasoline stations that abruptly stopped operations.
“We in the PNP fully understand the situation that gas station owners face amid the challenges brought by the situation in the Middle East. But if the sudden closure is for illegal scheme, then expect police action on this matter,” Nartatez said.
The Department of Energy (DOE) has tapped the PNP to assist in checking stations suspected of hoarding fuel or manipulating prices. Authorities are particularly concerned about independent operators who allegedly halted services to exploit the ongoing oil crisis.
Fuel prices in the Philippines have surged following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and escalating conflict in the Middle East, with crude oil nearing $100 per barrel. This has triggered widespread anxiety among motorists and businesses, as some stations reportedly raised prices illegally before the government’s official adjustments.
Police presence has been strengthened at key fuel supply points to ensure compliance with regulations and prevent service disruptions. Local government units (LGUs) have also been directed to coordinate with police chiefs in monitoring stations within their jurisdictions.
The DOE has warned that closures and price manipulation could lead to penalties, including revocation of business permits. Officials stressed that while supply challenges are real, profiteering at the expense of consumers will not be tolerated.
The PNP’s investigation underscores the government’s effort to stabilize fuel distribution and protect consumers during a volatile period in global energy markets. For motorists, the probe offers reassurance that authorities are actively working to prevent artificial shortages and unfair price hikes.
This development highlights the delicate balance between protecting business interests and safeguarding public welfare, as the Philippines braces for continued volatility in global oil supply.
