House panel finds grounds in 3rd and 4th impeachment complaints vs Sara Duterte — Is the country entering another political showdown?

MANILA, Philippines — The House Committee on Justice has declared that the third and fourth impeachment complaints filed against Sara Duterte contain sufficient grounds, paving the way for formal hearings that could further intensify political tensions in the Philippines.

During a recent announcement, committee chairperson Gerville Luistro confirmed that the panel has already set initial dates for the impeachment hearings. According to Luistro, the scheduled sessions will take place on March 25, April 14, April 22, and April 29, 2026, marking the beginning of the committee’s formal deliberations on the complaints.

The declaration that the complaints have sufficient basis does not automatically mean that the Vice President will be impeached. Instead, it signifies that the allegations presented warrant further examination through official hearings. During this stage, lawmakers will review evidence, listen to testimonies, and determine whether the case should move forward to the next step of the impeachment process.

The development is expected to draw significant public attention, as impeachment proceedings involving high-ranking officials often carry major political implications. Supporters of Duterte may view the process as politically motivated, while critics may see it as an essential constitutional mechanism to ensure accountability among government leaders.

Impeachment, after all, is designed as a tool within democratic systems to investigate serious allegations against top officials. However, it also inevitably becomes entangled in political alliances, rivalries, and shifting power dynamics within the government.

Beyond the legal arguments, the situation could also influence public trust in institutions. If handled transparently and fairly, the process may strengthen democratic accountability. But if perceived as purely political maneuvering, it risks deepening divisions among citizens and political factions.

As the scheduled hearings approach, the nation is likely to witness intense debates both inside Congress and across the public sphere.

With impeachment proceedings once again entering the national spotlight, the question arises: are these mechanisms strengthening democratic accountability—or becoming instruments of political conflict?
