LUCENA CITY, Quezon — A significant milestone has been achieved in Lucena City as Barangay Market View was officially declared “drug-cleared” by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), following its compliance with the standards set under the Barangay Drug Clearing Program.

The recognition comes after sustained efforts led by Barangay Chairperson Joven Gunday, in close coordination with the Lucena City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC) and the Philippine National Police. Together, they implemented measures aimed at eliminating illegal drug activities while promoting peace and order within the community.

Authorities highlighted that the success was not achieved overnight but was the result of consistent collaboration between local leaders, law enforcement, and residents. The involvement of Romulo A. Albacea, Provincial Director of the Quezon Police Provincial Office, was also cited as instrumental in strengthening coordination and ensuring that national anti-crime strategies were effectively carried out at the grassroots level.

The declaration of a “drug-cleared” status is often seen as a symbol of progress—a sign that a community has met strict criteria, including the absence of drug supply, demand, and related activities. However, beyond the recognition lies a deeper challenge: sustainability. Maintaining this status requires continuous vigilance, community participation, and long-term rehabilitation efforts for those previously affected by drug use.

While the achievement is commendable, it also opens a broader conversation about the country’s evolving approach to addressing illegal drugs. Is the focus shifting effectively from enforcement to prevention and rehabilitation? And more importantly, how can communities ensure that being “drug-cleared” is not just a temporary label, but a lasting reality?

As Barangay Market View celebrates this milestone, one question lingers: Does a “drug-cleared” declaration truly mark the end of the problem—or is it only the beginning of a more difficult journey toward lasting change? (Larawan mula: Lucena Cadac / Facebook)
