Fuel costs drive supermarket price hikes April 1 — Is inflation worsening?

Prices of basic goods in Philippine supermarkets are set to increase starting April 1, 2026, with pasta, instant noodles, canned goods, candies, and bottled water among the affected items.

The hikes, estimated at 7–10 percent, are being driven by rising fuel costs linked to Middle East tensions.

The Philippine Amalgamated Supermarkets Association Inc. (PAGASA) confirmed that several manufacturers have already announced price adjustments. PAGASA President Steven Cua explained in a radio interview that only a handful of brands are implementing increases for now, but more may follow if fuel prices continue to climb.

“So far, only a few. Can be counted on two hands. Just a few,” Cua told GMA Integrated News.

Among the products expected to rise are pasta, instant noodles, canned goods, and candies, with increases ranging from 7 to 10 percent. Cua also noted that a drinking water company will impose a significant price hike due to higher transportation costs, as its supply comes from Cebu in the Visayas.

“Tubig ‘yung isa, medyo malaki ang itataas. Pagkakaalam ko kasi ito ay galing pa ng Cebu, Visayas, that is why the cost of transportation again krudo, langis ang problema,” he said.

The adjustments come as the Philippines grapples with the impact of global oil supply disruptions caused by escalating conflict in the Middle East. Fuel prices have surged in recent weeks, raising transportation and production costs across industries.

Supermarkets are advising consumers to prepare for higher prices beginning April 1, 2026, though officials stress that supply remains stable. Analysts warn that the combined effect of rising fuel, rice, LPG, and grocery prices could further push inflation beyond government targets, straining household budgets.
