MANILA —An Australian passenger bound for Cebu reported to airport police that her cash amounting to P7,000 was stolen from her shoulder bag during a security inspection at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 on Friday, April 3, 2026. Authorities are now reviewing CCTV footage to identify the suspect.

The passenger told investigators that her hand-carry bag underwent X-ray scanning at the final security checkpoint, while a male inspector checked its contents. After the inspection, she and her companion proceeded to the boarding gate. It was only when she attempted to buy bottled water that she discovered her Philippine peso cash was missing.

Airport police and the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group immediately requested a review of CCTV footage in the presence of the passenger to determine who may have taken the money. However, the Australian national decided not to file a formal criminal complaint as boarding for her flight was already in progress.

The Office for Transportation Security (OTS) confirmed that it is coordinating closely with the New NAIA Infra Corp. and the PNP Aviation Security Group to ensure accountability. OTS Administrator Undersecretary Gilberto DC Cruz stressed the agency’s commitment to integrity and passenger safety.

“We do not tolerate such acts within our organization. Any violation of trust or misconduct will be thoroughly investigated, and those found responsible will face appropriate consequences, both criminal and administrative punishments, if warranted,” Cruz said.

Authorities assured the public that the case will be pursued despite the absence of a formal complaint, emphasizing that passenger safety and trust in airport security remain a top priority. The incident has raised concerns among travelers, prompting calls for stricter monitoring of inspection procedures at NAIA.

This case highlights ongoing challenges in airport security and the importance of transparency and accountability in safeguarding passengers and their belongings.
