Playing in Ashfall — Harmless fun or dangerous trend?

ALBAY, Bicol — A video circulating online has drawn mixed reactions after a content creator was seen seemingly enjoying the thick ashfall from Mayon Volcano as if it were snow. The footage, taken in the public plaza and near the municipal hall of Guinobatan, shows the uploader playing around, playing with the ash, and even lying down on ash-covered pavement following the May 2 volcanic activity.

The ashfall was caused by the collapse of Mayon’s lava dome, which triggered pyroclastic density currents, locally known as “uson.” While the scene may appear harmless—or even amusing to some—it has raised serious concerns among health officials and disaster response advocates.

According to the Department of Health, volcanic ash is far from safe. Fine ash particles can be inhaled easily, potentially causing coughing, aggravating asthma, and leading to respiratory complications. Exposure may also result in eye irritation, including conjunctivitis, and skin issues such as itching and rashes. What may look like harmless gray powder is, in reality, a mix of tiny abrasive particles and potentially harmful substances.

This incident highlights a growing trend in the age of social media—where the pursuit of viral content can sometimes overshadow personal safety and public awareness. Moments like these can unintentionally downplay the real dangers of natural hazards, especially to audiences who may not fully understand the risks involved.

At the same time, it opens a broader conversation about responsibility—both for content creators and viewers. Should individuals prioritize engagement over safety? And how do such portrayals influence public perception, especially among younger audiences who might imitate what they see online?

Disasters are not spectacles, and ashfall is not snow. While curiosity is natural, understanding the risks is essential in preventing harm—not just to oneself, but to others who may follow the example.

In a world driven by views and virality, where should we draw the line between creative expression and responsible behavior?
