A Filipina teacher working in Thailand was arrested after allegedly abandoning her dead newborn inside a mall bathroom in Bangkok on March 20, 2026. Thai police confirmed the arrest after reviewing CCTV footage, while Philippine officials in Bangkok said they are closely monitoring the case.
Authorities reported that a concerned citizen discovered the lifeless infant inside a trash bag in the women’s restroom of a shopping mall in the Khlong Toei district. The janitress who found the bag noticed it was unusually heavy and, upon inspection, saw the body of the baby. She immediately alerted mall security, who then contacted police.
Thai police reviewed CCTV footage from the mall and identified the suspect, a 25-year-old Filipina teacher. She was apprehended hours later at a bus station after leaving the mall.
Philippine Embassy officials in Bangkok confirmed the arrest but withheld the teacher’s identity for privacy reasons. Philippine labor attaché Don Pancog told media that the woman “was forced to deliver her baby in one of the bathroom cubicles here at one of the malls here in Thailand. The medical reason for that, we still do not know.”
The incident has drawn significant attention both in Thailand and the Philippines, raising concerns about the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and the challenges they face abroad.
Thai authorities are continuing their investigation, while Philippine officials have pledged to provide assistance to the teacher as due process unfolds.
This case underscores the importance of mental health and support systems for OFWs, particularly those working in stressful environments far from home.
