US Navy seizes Iranian ship — Tensions spike in Gulf of Oman

WASHINGTON, April 20, 2026 — A US Navy destroyer fired on and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday, April 19, 2026, after the vessel attempted to evade a naval blockade, escalating already high tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Pentagon confirmed that the guided missile destroyer USS Spruance intercepted the Iranian vessel Touska after it ignored repeated warnings to stop. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social, “The guided missile destroyer USS Spruance stopped them right in their tracks by blowing a hole in the engineroom. Right now, U.S. Marines have custody of the vessel and are seeing what’s on board!”

The incident marks the first forcible seizure since the United States began its blockade of Iranian ports last week. The blockade was imposed to restrict Tehran’s maritime trade amid ongoing disputes over regional security and nuclear negotiations. According to US military officials, the Touska was attempting to bypass the blockade near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route.

Iran’s military command swiftly condemned the interception, warning of retaliation. Iranian state media reported that Tehran would not send its delegation to scheduled peace talks in Islamabad on April 20, casting doubt on the fragile 10-day ceasefire agreed earlier this month. Analysts say the seizure could derail diplomatic efforts and intensify hostilities in the Gulf region.

The Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz remain flashpoints for global energy security, as nearly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes through the narrow waterway. Any disruption risks driving up global oil prices, which have already surged in recent weeks due to instability in the Middle East.

US officials have not disclosed what cargo was aboard the Touska, but Marines are currently inspecting the vessel. The Pentagon stressed that the operation was conducted in line with international maritime law, though Iran disputes the legality of the blockade.

The seizure underscores the growing volatility in the region, with Washington signaling its determination to enforce the blockade and Tehran vowing to resist. The coming days are expected to test whether diplomatic channels can prevent further escalation or whether the confrontation will spiral into broader conflict.
