WASHINGTON, April 29, 2026 — The United States will issue a limited run of commemorative passports bearing an image of Donald Trump as part of celebrations marking the country’s 250th anniversary of independence.

The U.S. Department of State said the special passports are designed to coincide with the July 4 semiquincentennial, with the president’s portrait appearing on an interior page alongside patriotic imagery tied to the 1776 Declaration of Independence.

A State Department spokesperson said, “These passports will feature customized artwork and enhanced imagery while maintaining the same security features that make the U.S. Passport the most secure documents in the world.”

Officials confirmed that the commemorative passports will retain all standard security protections and will be issued without additional fees, although availability is expected to be limited and tied to specific issuance locations and supply.

Reports indicate that roughly tens of thousands of the special passports could be distributed, with some applicants receiving them by default at select passport agencies while standard versions remain available through other application channels.

The design includes Trump’s image positioned opposite artwork depicting the signing of the Declaration of Independence, along with elements such as the American flag and a stylized version of his signature rendered in gold.

The initiative marks the first known instance of a living U.S. president appearing in an American passport, a move that departs from longstanding norms of keeping official travel documents politically neutral.

The rollout is part of a broader “America250” campaign that includes commemorative items and national events tied to the anniversary, reflecting the administration’s effort to highlight national identity and historical milestones.

The inclusion of Trump’s likeness in official government materials follows similar efforts across federal programs and commemorative projects, which have drawn both support from allies and criticism from opponents concerned about the politicization of national symbols.

U.S. passports, issued by the State Department, serve as primary identification for international travel and typically remain valid for up to 10 years for adults, meaning the commemorative versions could remain in circulation well beyond the anniversary year.
