ORIENTAL MINDORO, Philippines — After years of limited transport options, a long-awaited development is finally on the horizon for residents and travelers in Oriental Mindoro. The Pola Port is set to be revived, with plans underway to open a direct sea route between Pola and Batangas in the coming months. The initiative is being led by the local government of Pola under Mayor Jennifer Mindanao Cruz, signaling a renewed push to improve connectivity and regional mobility.
On January 14, representatives from the Pola LGU met with key maritime and port authorities, including the Philippine Ports Authority–Calapan, the Philippine Coast Guard–Oriental Mindoro, the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), and private shipping firm Island Water. During the meeting, Island Water confirmed that a vessel is already available for the Pola–Batangas route, with fare structures currently under study. The target is to open the route to the public by Holy Week, a period that traditionally sees a surge in passenger traffic.
Beyond Pola–Batangas, local officials also proposed additional routes such as Pola–Romblon, Pola–Marinduque, and a Romblon–Pola–Batangas loop, which could further integrate Mindoro into nearby island economies. If realized, these routes would provide alternative gateways in and out of Mindoro, easing pressure on the often-congested Calapan Port—especially during peak seasons like Christmas, New Year, and long holidays.
More than convenience, the revival of Pola Port represents opportunity. Improved access can stimulate local tourism, reduce travel time and costs, and open new economic prospects for farmers, traders, and small businesses. Still, long-term success will depend on consistent operations, safety standards, affordability, and sustained government oversight. As plans move closer to implementation, one question remains: Will the Pola–Batangas route finally unlock Mindoro’s full potential—or will it struggle to deliver lasting impact beyond its promising start?
