An airport staff member at NAIA Terminal 3 was arrested after making a bomb joke during a manual inspection, prompting alarm among aviation security personnel. Authorities stressed that bomb jokes are taken seriously and can lead to criminal charges.

MANILA — January 27, 2026 — A station loader assigned at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 was apprehended after allegedly cracking a bomb joke while undergoing inspection. According to the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEGROUP), the incident occurred on Monday, January 26, when the employee handed over his vest for inspection and suddenly exclaimed, “O… ayan may bomba dyan!”

The remark, though made in jest, immediately alarmed aviation security personnel on duty. Bomb jokes are strictly prohibited under Philippine law, particularly in airports, as they can cause panic and disrupt operations. The suspect was quickly restrained and taken into custody for questioning.

PNP-AVSEGROUP confirmed that the employee is facing charges related to violation of Presidential Decree 1727, which penalizes malicious dissemination of false information about bombs or explosives. The decree has long been enforced to prevent unnecessary panic and ensure the safety of passengers and staff.

Authorities emphasized that the incident serves as a reminder that even casual remarks about explosives are treated as threats in highly sensitive areas like airports. “Bomb jokes are no laughing matter. They compromise security and can lead to serious legal consequences,” officials reiterated.

The arrest was documented and shared by the PNP Aviation Security Group on its official social media page, underscoring their commitment to maintaining strict safety protocols at NAIA.

This case highlights the importance of vigilance and professionalism within airport premises, especially given the heightened global concerns over aviation security. Passengers and staff alike are urged to avoid irresponsible remarks that may trigger alarm or disrupt operations.

The suspect remains under investigation, and authorities assured the public that measures are in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.
