FEBRUARY 15, 2026 — A 77-year-old German national thought he could sneak past Philippine airport security with two hollowed-out bibles in his backpack. Inside those “holy books”? Not verses, but 8.14 kilos of shabu worth a staggering ₱55.38 million.

According to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), the man, identified only as Peter, flew in from Johannesburg with a Hong Kong layover before landing at NAIA Terminal 3. His plan unraveled quickly when x-ray operators spotted something suspicious in his bag. What followed was a textbook interdiction: Customs officers, PDEA agents, and the Interagency Drug Interdiction Task Group opened the bibles and found nine taped pouches of crystal meth.

Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno stated, “We are tightening our controls through technology, intelligence and inter-agency coordination. Our message is clear – attempts to bring illegal drugs into the country will be detected, intercepted and prosecuted.”

₱55 million worth of shabu is not just a headline figure. That’s poison that could have seeped into communities, wrecked families, and fueled crime. The fact that it was disguised inside religious texts makes the story even more jarring — an unholy twist that reminds us how far traffickers will go.

This bust is both reassuring and sobering. Reassuring because our airport security is clearly alert and effective. Sobering because it shows the relentless creativity of drug syndicates who will exploit anything — even faith — to push their trade.

What trick do you think smugglers will try next?
