CEBU CITY, Philippines —  A senior citizen couple was killed on Valentine’s Day after being struck by a delivery truck along the South Road Properties (SRP) in Cebu City at around 7 p.m.

The victims were identified as Salvador Geraldizo Jr., 67, and his wife Cecilia, 68, both residents of Tupas Street, Barangay Sawang Calero. They were rushed to a nearby hospital but were declared dead on arrival.

According to the Cebu City Police Office Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU), the couple was crossing from the center island when the incident occurred. Investigators said the delivery truck, driven by 38-year-old Charlie Alcontin of Sitio Sagay, Barangay Borbon, was traveling along the center lane toward Cebu City when the couple suddenly appeared.

Alcontin told authorities that he saw the victims crossing but was unable to stop in time, resulting in the fatal collision. The TEU has taken him into custody, and he will face charges of Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Double Homicide.

Police reminded pedestrians to exercise caution when crossing major thoroughfares like SRP, which has long been considered a high-risk area for accidents due to heavy traffic and fast-moving vehicles. The tragic incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety measures and the installation of more pedestrian-friendly infrastructure along the busy stretch.

The Geraldizo couple’s death on Valentine’s Day has drawn sympathy from their community, with neighbors describing them as kind and well-loved residents of Sawang Calero. Their passing underscores the dangers of pedestrian crossings along Cebu’s busiest roads and the urgent need for improved traffic safety.
