Chavit slams ‘silent Senate,’ teases 2028 run

FEBRUARY 26, 2026 — Former Ilocos Sur governor Luis “Chavit” Singson is once again stirring the political pot, this time with talk of a Senate run in 2028. His reason? He’s fed up with what he calls a “silent” Senate. In an interview on Bilyonaryo News Channel’s At The Forefront, Singson said, “Iniisip ko na tumakbo na rin na senador sa mga pangyayaring ito. Kailangan may magsalita sa Senado eh. Wala eh.”

(I’m thinking of running as senator because of these events. Someone needs to speak in the Senate. There’s none.)

This isn’t the first time Singson has toyed with a Senate bid. He withdrew from the 2025 race citing health concerns, but now he says the current state of the chamber has him reconsidering. Supporters, he claims, are pushing him to go for it.

“Marami nagsasabi sa akin na ituloy ko ang pagtakbo as senator. I might also,” he revealed.

(Many are telling me to pursue a Senate run. I might also.)

What’s fueling his frustration? Alleged irregularities in flood control projects and whispers of corruption involving government officials. Singson insists that the Senate needs stronger voices willing to call things out.

But, to recall, he’s no stranger to controversy or power plays. His career has been marked by influence, alliances, and the occasional headline-grabbing move.

Singson’s pitch is simple — he wants to “learn more” about what’s happening in the Senate by being inside it. Yet, we must ask: Is this about public service, or about staying relevant in a political landscape that’s increasingly dominated by personalities rather than policies?

We have long complained about a Senate that sometimes feels detached from everyday struggles. Rising prices, corruption scandals, and political dynasties — these are the issues that resonate with the masses. If Singson enters the race, he’ll have to prove he’s not just adding noise but actually bringing solutions.

Do we really need another political veteran promising to shake up the Senate, or is it time to demand new voices who can speak for the people without the baggage of the past?
