MANILA, Philippines — February 26, 2026. The National Unity Party (NUP), one of the largest political blocs in the House of Representatives, has signaled that it is unlikely to support the impeachment complaints filed against Vice President Sara Duterte unless “compelling new evidence” is presented during the hearings.
In a statement released Wednesday, the party said, “At this stage, the NUP has not seen the inclusion of new and material evidence that would warrant a departure from issues that have already been the subject of prior inquiries and extensive public hearings.”
The NUP emphasized that impeachment should not be used as a political weapon, stressing that its members will only reconsider their stance if fresh evidence emerges that fundamentally alters the factual basis of the complaints.
“Unless compelling new evidence emerges during the course of these hearings that fundamentally alters the factual basis for the impeachment complaint, the NUP will most likely not vote in favor of this measure,” the party added.
Vice President Duterte is currently facing four impeachment complaints referred to the House Committee on Justice earlier this week. The complaints accuse her of corruption involving ₱612.5 million in confidential funds, bribery in the Department of Education, and unexplained wealth, among other allegations.
The NUP’s position is seen as crucial, given its influence in the House. Without its backing, the impeachment effort against Duterte may struggle to gain momentum unless new revelations surface during the proceedings.
This development underscores the uphill battle faced by Duterte’s critics, as the impeachment process moves forward amid heightened political tensions and scrutiny over the use of government funds.
