MUNTINLUPA CITY, Philippines — March 12, 2026 — The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has denied reports circulating online that persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) and other detention facilities are experiencing an outbreak of “galis” or scabies.
In a statement, BuCor clarified that there is no truth to claims of widespread skin disease among inmates. Officials stressed that medical teams regularly monitor the health of PDLs and provide treatment when necessary.
“Walang katotohanan ang kumakalat na balita na may outbreak ng galis sa NBP at iba pang piitan,” BuCor said, emphasizing that the agency remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of detainees.
The correctional bureau explained that while individual cases of skin irritation may occur, these are promptly addressed by prison health units. BuCor added that sanitation and hygiene programs are continuously implemented to prevent any form of outbreak inside facilities.
The agency also urged the public to be cautious about unverified information spreading on social media, noting that such reports can cause unnecessary panic and damage the reputation of correctional institutions. “We appeal to the public to rely only on official advisories and verified updates,” BuCor reiterated.
This clarification comes amid heightened public concern over prison conditions, with advocacy groups frequently calling for improved healthcare and living standards for PDLs. BuCor assured that it is working closely with the Department of Health to ensure that medical services inside prisons remain adequate and responsive.
By firmly denying the alleged outbreak, BuCor seeks to reassure families of detainees and the wider public that health and safety remain a top priority within the country’s correctional system.
