Government rolls out ₱5K fuel subsidy for PUV drivers amid oil surge

Margret Dianne FerminIpinost noong 2026-03-12 09:20:51 Government rolls out ₱5K fuel subsidy for PUV drivers amid oil surge

Public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers in Metro Manila will begin receiving a ₱5,000 fuel subsidy starting Tuesday, March 17, 2026, as part of the government’s effort to cushion the impact of soaring oil prices caused by unrest in the Middle East. The rollout will later expand nationwide.

The Palace announced the subsidy program after a meeting led by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto with Metro Manila mayors and key agencies. The initiative is designed to provide immediate relief to drivers who have been hit hardest by the recent surge in fuel costs.

According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the distribution will begin with tricycle drivers in Metro Manila, followed by jeepney, taxi, Transport Network Vehicle Service (TNVS), and bus drivers. DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez confirmed that the agency is coordinating with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and local governments to ensure efficient rollout.

Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian emphasized that the ₱5,000 cash aid is part of the government’s broader Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program, with half of the ₱60-billion fund earmarked for fuel subsidies. He explained that the aid will be distributed directly through local government units to ensure drivers can access the support quickly.

The subsidy comes at a critical time, as fuel prices continue to climb due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Analysts warn that without intervention, transport fares could rise sharply, burdening commuters and worsening inflation. The government hopes the ₱5,000 assistance will help stabilize operations for drivers and prevent fare hikes in the short term.

While Metro Manila drivers will be the first to benefit, officials confirmed that the program will be rolled out nationwide shortly after March 17. This means PUV drivers in other regions can expect similar assistance in the coming weeks.

The fuel subsidy program underscores the government’s recognition of the vital role PUV drivers play in keeping the economy moving. By providing direct financial support, authorities aim to ease the burden of rising fuel costs and maintain affordable public transportation for millions of Filipinos.
