MARCH 26, 2026 — The Social Security System (SSS) has just reassured overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the Middle East that their benefits remain accessible online despite escalating regional conflicts, thanks to its strengthened digital platforms. After all, this is about survival for thousands of Filipinos who rely on SSS support while navigating uncertainty abroad.
The SSS announcement comes at a time when tensions in the Middle East are heightening, leaving many OFWs anxious about their livelihoods. SSS President and CEO Robert Joseph M. de Claro emphasized the reliability of the My.SSS Portal, which allows members to file benefit claims and loan applications without interruption.
For OFWs who lose jobs involuntarily, unemployment benefits remain available — provided they meet requirements and are certified by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).
“Even in these challenging times, our digital infrastructure ensures seamless service delivery,” de Claro said. “Members in the Middle East need not worry; they can manage their accounts safely from anywhere with internet access.”
Facial authentication: a game-changer
A standout innovation is the Annual Confirmation of Pensioners (ACOP) facial authentication with liveness check, which lets pensioners verify their identity securely through smartphones. This eliminates the need for risky travel to embassies or consulates, especially amid volatile security conditions.
De Claro noted, “It reduces fraud risks and eliminates the need for travel amid the current security situation in the Middle East. These tools were purpose-built to empower OFWs, allowing transactions ‘whenever, wherever’ even in crisis zones.”
As of end-2025, 1,476,645 OFWs were covered by SSS, with 540,018 active paying members. For many families in the Philippines, remittances are the backbone of household survival. Ensuring uninterrupted access to benefits means OFWs can continue supporting their loved ones even when war drums beat louder abroad.
This digital push also signals a broader shift: government agencies are finally catching up to the reality that OFWs need services that transcend borders. It’s a reminder that technology, when used right, can be a shield against instability.
But while SSS is stepping up digitally, will other government agencies follow suit with the same urgency and innovation?
