LUCBAN, Quezon — In response to rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of basic goods, students from Rise for Education – Southern Luzon State University launched a community pantry initiative in Lucban, Quezon. The project, named “BIYAHEnihan,” aims to provide food and essential supplies to local residents while drawing attention to broader economic concerns affecting everyday Filipinos.

The initiative comes at a time when many households are struggling with the ripple effects of fuel price hikes, which significantly impact transportation, food distribution, and overall living expenses. Through this effort, student volunteers distributed goods to those in need, embodying a spirit of bayanihan while also raising awareness of systemic issues.

However, the group emphasized that BIYAHEnihan is more than just a humanitarian activity. It also serves as a platform for advocacy, particularly calling for the repeal of the Oil Deregulation Law and the removal of fuel excise taxes—policies they believe contribute to the burden faced by consumers. According to their statement, the initiative reflects both compassion and collective action: not only to help, but to take a stand.

This dual purpose highlights a growing trend among youth-led movements—combining direct community support with political and economic discourse. While community pantries gained prominence during times of crisis, their evolution into spaces for advocacy raises important questions about the role of citizens, especially the youth, in shaping public policy.

On one hand, such initiatives demonstrate grassroots solidarity and immediate relief. On the other, they signal a deeper frustration with structural challenges that go beyond what short-term aid can address.

As rising costs continue to affect communities, efforts like BIYAHEnihan blur the line between charity and activism—offering both assistance and a message.

In times of economic hardship, should community action remain focused on relief—or evolve into a stronger voice demanding systemic change?
