Sen. Risa takes the global stage in Barcelona — and calls out every leader who thinks they're untouchable

APRIL 19, 2026 — A Filipino senator stood before the world and said what needed to be said. Sen. Risa Hontiveros just had one of her biggest moments on the global stage — and honestly, it couldn't have come at a better time.
Last April 17–18, Barcelona, Spain played host to the inaugural Global Progressive Mobilisation (GPM), a landmark gathering of world leaders, activists, and thinkers united under one urgent mission: to make progressive solutions visible, credible, and powerful enough to counter the global rise of authoritarian and far-right forces.
And among the roughly 6,000 left-leaning elected officials, policy analysts, and activists who converged at the Barcelona convention center was our very own Senator Risa Hontiveros.
Notable participants included Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Brazilian President Lula da Silva, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Ressa, European Council President António Costa, and India's opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. Tendance Coatesy Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was there too. It was that kind of room.
Invited personally by PM Sánchez, Sen. Risa took the opportunity to speak not just for herself, but for every Filipino who has ever felt the weight of a broken system.
"Democracy is only meaningful if it is felt in the daily lives of ordinary people. We should continue to work that it be felt by our farmers, our fisherfolk, our workers, our OFWs, our every citizen," she said.
Now that's a direct call to action — one that should resonate deeply in our country where most of us continue to struggle with corruption, rising prices, and institutions that sometimes feel more loyal to power than to the people.
She didn't stop there. She called out something that hits even closer to home for us: "This means genuinely protecting the independence of institutions that HOLD POWER TO ACCOUNT ... NO GOVERNMENT, NO PERSON — no matter how big or strong — is beyond ACCOUNTABILITY."
As German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil put it at the rally, "The far right is international, so we must be too."
Sen. Risa clearly got the memo — and brought the Philippines into that conversation.
Now when will our own institutions at home finally live up to the democracy Sen. Risa so proudly defended abroad?
