QUEZON CITY, Philippines — April 23, 2026 — A man allegedly addicted to the illegal substance known locally as “scatter” was arrested after staging a robbery using a toy gun, shocking residents in his community.
Police reported that the suspect, identified only as “Alias Boy,” attempted to hold up a convenience store in Barangay Commonwealth on April 21. Witnesses said the man entered the store visibly agitated and pointed what appeared to be a firearm at the cashier, demanding money.
Upon closer inspection, authorities discovered that the weapon was a plastic toy gun. Despite this, the cashier, fearing for her life, handed over cash amounting to ₱2,500. The suspect fled but was quickly apprehended by barangay tanods and police officers after a brief chase.
Investigators revealed that the suspect has a history of drug abuse and is believed to be hooked on “scatter,” a street term for a type of methamphetamine. Police noted that his erratic behavior during the robbery was consistent with substance influence.
Barangay officials condemned the incident, stressing the dangers posed by individuals under the influence of illegal drugs. “Nakakatakot kasi kahit baril-barilan lang, puwede pa ring makapanakot at makasakit,” one resident said.
The suspect is now facing charges of robbery and alarm and scandal. Authorities also plan to file separate cases related to his drug use. Police urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, especially with the rising cases of petty crimes linked to substance abuse.
