Unbothered queen? Sara ditches Congress grilling, plays history host at mall exhibit

APRIL 29, 2026 — Vice President Sara Duterte skipped her own impeachment hearing to attend a pop-up exhibit in Laguna, drawing sharp public attention to the contrast between her cultural showcase and the gravity of the allegations being tackled in Congress. The House justice committee is now weighing probable cause on complaints that include her alleged threats to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the First Lady, and former Speaker Martin Romualdez.

On April 29, Duterte was seen at Robinsons Laguna for the ribbon-cutting of “EXTRA+Ordinary: The Vice Presidents of the Philippines”, a traveling exhibit meant to highlight the contributions of past and present vice presidents. Her office described the event as a way to bring history closer to the public, emphasizing service and leadership.

“Layunin ng exhibit na mas mapalapit sa publiko ang makulay na kasaysayan ng Tanggapan ng Pangalawang Pangulo,” the OVP said.

(The exhibit aims to bring the colorful history of the Office of the Vice President closer to the public.)

But while Duterte was celebrating history, lawmakers in Manila were digging into her own record. The House justice committee pressed forward with its fourth impeachment hearing, focusing on her 2024 statement where she allegedly said she had arranged to have the president and his family killed if she were assassinated first.

The National Bureau of Investigation confirmed the authenticity of the video containing her remarks.

Committee chair Rep. Gerville Luistro noted that members may already be ready to vote, saying probable cause has likely been established. Two separate complaints — one from clergy and lawyers, another from lawyer Nathaniel Cabrera — are under deliberation.

The panel has also flagged questions about Duterte’s confidential funds and her wealth disclosures.

Picture that — a vice president choosing a mall exhibit over facing allegations of grave threats and unexplained wealth. Supporters may see her presence at the exhibit as a bid to humanize the office, but critics argue it reflects avoidance and utter disregard for accountability. At a time when transparency is demanded, her absence from the hearing raises questions about priorities.

Is the VP meant to inspire through curated exhibits, or should she first prove her integrity before the people she claims to serve?
