GENERAL LUNA, Quezon — A missing fisherman from General Luna, Quezon has been found dead after several days of search, bringing grief to his family and the local community. The victim, identified as Joel Torres from Sitio Mangayao, Barangay Bacong Ibaba, was discovered floating at sea after days of uncertainty regarding his whereabouts.

According to reports, the body was first spotted by Jerrymie Damian, more popularly known as “Batang Heluna,” in the waters near Macalelon. Upon confirming the sighting, he immediately coordinated with fellow fishermen, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), and the Philippine Coast Guard.

The victim’s remains were eventually recovered in the waters off Pitogo. Authorities carried out immediate retrieval operations, and based on official advice, the body was promptly buried due to prolonged exposure to seawater.

The incident has cast a somber mood over the community, as residents extend their condolences to the bereaved family. For many coastal families, fishing is not just a livelihood—it is a daily risk taken to survive.

While this tragedy may appear to be an isolated case, it reflects a broader concern about the safety of small-scale fishermen. Many go out to sea with limited equipment, minimal weather monitoring tools, and little access to emergency response systems. In times of sudden weather changes or accidents, help can be delayed or unavailable.

This raises an important conversation about the need for stronger safety measures, better communication systems, and sustained government support for coastal communities whose lives depend on the sea.

Beyond the sorrow, the incident serves as a reminder that behind every catch is a risk that often goes unseen.

How many more lives must be lost before stronger protections for fishermen become a priority rather than a reaction?
