LUCENA CITY, Quezon — Two alleged drug suspects were arrested in a buy-bust operation conducted by the Lucena City Police Station in Barangay Dalahican on the afternoon of May 5, 2026.
The suspects, identified as alias “Mamay,” 53, a fish vendor, and alias “Jaber,” 32, an online seller, are both residents of Lucena City. According to police records, the two are listed as High Value Individuals (HVI) and have prior involvement in drug-related cases. Mamay was previously released through plea bargaining in 2019, while Jaber was acquitted in a separate case in 2025.
Authorities seized approximately 300 grams of suspected shabu with an estimated street value of over ₱6.1 million. In addition, around 11 kilograms of dried marijuana leaves valued at more than ₱3.9 million were recovered. Other confiscated items included weighing scales, packaging materials, marked money used in the operation, a firearm, and ammunition.
The suspects are currently detained at the police station and are facing multiple charges related to illegal drugs and possession of firearms.
While the operation is considered a significant success in terms of enforcement, it also raises deeper concerns about the persistence of illegal drug networks. The fact that individuals previously involved in drug cases have resurfaced in another operation highlights ongoing challenges in rehabilitation, monitoring, and long-term prevention.
Law enforcement efforts continue to focus on arrests and seizures, but the recurring involvement of repeat offenders points to a broader issue—whether current strategies are enough to break the cycle. Beyond enforcement, there is a growing need to strengthen rehabilitation programs, community awareness, and systemic approaches that address the root causes of drug involvement.
As authorities intensify their campaign, the question remains:
Do high-profile arrests signal real progress—or reveal how deeply rooted the drug problem still is?
